Selling maize: a summer livelihood on Gaza's Corniche

Near the seashore of Gaza City, Shadi Miqdad, (21 years old), decorates the humble place where he displays his goods with corn cobs, in preparation for receiving customers, after the start of the summer vacation and the increase in visitors to the place.

Miqdad says that he is waiting for the summer to increase work and livelihood in it, coinciding with the corn season loved by young and old.

He and dozens of other young people work in the same field in different places in conjunction with the spread of unemployment, which exceeded 45% in the Gaza Strip. But most go to the seashore for sale, as it is the first outlet for the besieged enclave, he said.

Miqdad is skilled in serving corn to customers, some of which are served grilled or boiled, or in a bowl called 'corn mandi' with the addition of spices and cheese. He said: "Corn season helps us attract customers, so everyone is creating new ways to offer the most tastes at reasonable prices".

In addition, Miqdad decorates the place with wooden chairs overlooking the sea, with an umbrella that protects visitors from the sun, in a variety of shapes and sizes. He serves corn and hot drinks in his humble place, noting that they have reduced prices to consider the harsh economic conditions in Gaza.
